Employees’ skills use at work affects their employability, income, and chances of upward mobility. Yet empirical evidence on the dynamics of skills use over the career is sparse. We provide the first analysis of intra-individual changes in work skills used at the workplace over a four-year window for individuals in different career stages. We present novel insights into disparities in general (transferable) and specific (more linked to specific occupations) work skills use by educational groups, ability groups, and occupationally mobile and immobile individuals. We use a task-based approach measuring skills that employees actually use at work. We employ data of the longitudinal nationally representative adult cohorts of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS).
