In the last decades research is more and more conducted in teams and collaborations in science are therefore rapidly increasing. Even though structural properties of this development are examined by many scholars, current research lacks a qualitative understanding of collaborations in science. What are the prerequisites of a successful research cooperation? Which intra- and interorganizational conditions are relevant for the success of cooperative research projects? How are different conditions interrelated? How do they interact and how does this interplay possibly contribute to the success or failure of research collaborations?

We investigate these questions in a pilot study conducted at the MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen. We collected and analyzed documents on the organizational structure of the MARUM as well as on collaborative projects within the MARUM-network. From July 2015 to January 2016 we conducted 31 expert interviews within the MARUM-network and one group discussion with eight members of the MARUM. The interview partners were carefully selected in order to cover a broad variety of experiences and viewpoints on successful research collaborations. The selection criteria were position and professional status, discipline, institution and organizational tasks. Additionally we analyzed the co-authorship network of the MARUM-researchers between 2001 and 2015.
